Vision, passion project, labour of love… whatever you call it, this magnificently restored villa in Puglia offers an exceptional setting for a family celebration or a memorable gathering of friends. Once the holiday residence of a wealthy northern Italian family, the villa was passed down through generations before being discovered by its current English owners. Their meticulous five-year restoration has resulted in something truly special: the grandeur and original character have been beautifully preserved, while the interiors and amenities have been seamlessly updated to meet modern expectations.
As you might expect in this culturally rich corner of Italy, Villa Mea is steeped in history. Where else could you stay among original frescoed ceilings while also enjoying a private tennis court, swimming pool and a glamorous pool house? The bedrooms are understated yet wonderfully luxurious, featuring original shutters, carefully chosen local antiques, and immaculate new en suites. Designed with groups in mind, the villa offers both generous communal areas and quieter corners to retreat to: gather in the large kitchen-diner, relax in the upper living room, or spread out across the extensive gardens. There is even a small office space for those who may need to check in with work.
The pool house feels almost like a villa in its own right, complete with a full kitchen, gym room, roof terrace, dining table and indoor/outdoor music system – a dream setup for multi-generation groups seeking space and flexibility. Finished to the exceptional standards, the entire house is fully air-conditioned, ensuring complete comfort even in the height of the southern Italian summer.
Villa Mea is set in Salento, the sun-drenched heel of Italy’s iconic boot. This glorious, increasingly sought-after region is less widely known than the neighbouring Valle d’Itria, yet staying here places you within easy reach of many of Puglia’s highlights. The beautiful Baroque towns of Gallipoli, Nardò and Lecce are all around half an hour away, while Porto Cesareo, home to one of Puglia’s most celebrated beaches, is a 35-minute drive. Closer to home, Neviano (3 minutes) offers handy local shops, and Aradeo (7 minutes) provides a wider choice of restaurants and amenities. Your nearest beach, Padula Bianca (20 minutes), is a long curve of fine sand and shallow turquoise water with convenient beach services. For something more rugged and natural, head a little north to Porto Selvaggio, set within a scenic national park.
