The Governor’s House, Gaios, Paxos

The Governor’s House is positioned just 1 km to Kloni Gouli and Kaki Lagkada beaches – so a gently 15 minute stroll and beautiful Gaios is just a 5 minute drive away with wonderful tavernas, cafes, bars and mini markets.

Steeped in history and timeless elegance, The Governor’s House is a residence that truly lives up to its distinguished name. During the 19th century, when Paxos was a British Protectorate, this remarkable stone villa served as the official home of the island’s British Governor — a place of prestige, presence, and quiet authority. Today, it stands as a beautifully preserved retreat, blending historic grandeur with the relaxed charm of Greek island living.

Approached through a landscape of ancient, statuesque olive trees, the house immediately captures the imagination. Its traditional stone façade, crafted with care and symmetry, reflects the architectural heritage of the island. Thick stone walls — designed long before modern air conditioning — keep the interiors wonderfully cool even at the height of summer, offering natural comfort throughout the day. The warm, earthy tones of the stone are perfectly offset by deep green shutters, creating a picture-postcard exterior that feels both noble and inviting.

Step inside, and you’ll find a home that is as spacious as it is welcoming. High ceilings and thoughtfully arranged interiors create a sense of light and airiness that complements the villa’s historic character. The open-plan living and dining area forms the heart of the house — an expansive, comfortable space where families and friends can gather, share stories, and enjoy unhurried meals together. The fully equipped kitchen ensures everything you need is close at hand, whether preparing a leisurely breakfast or a feast inspired by local island produce.

The sleeping quarters are equally well considered. A charming double bedroom with its own en-suite bathroom offers privacy and comfort, while two twin bedrooms provide flexible accommodation for children or friends. A separate shower room ensures convenience for larger groups, making the villa perfectly suited for families seeking both space and practicality.

et it is outside where The Governor’s House truly enchants. The generous pool terrace is surrounded by ancient olive groves whose silvery leaves shimmer in the breeze. From here, you can catch tantalising glimpses of the glistening Ionian Sea beyond the trees — flashes of blue that remind you how close you are to the coast. Whether you’re taking a refreshing dip in the pool, stretching out under the Mediterranean sun, or simply pausing to listen to the cicadas, the setting feels wonderfully serene and private.

A large outdoor dining table sits beneath a shady canopy, inviting long, relaxed lunches and magical evening dinners under the stars. As dusk settles, the scent of warm stone and olive leaves fills the air, and the atmosphere becomes quietly unforgettable — a place where past and present seem to merge effortlessly.

Despite its idyllic countryside setting, the villa remains conveniently located. The lively harbour town of Gaios — with its waterfront cafés, boutiques, and vibrant island energy — is just a short drive away. For beach lovers, the beautiful shores of Kloni Gouli Beach lie only a kilometre from the house, offering crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

The Governor’s House is more than just a holiday villa — it is a piece of Paxos history, lovingly preserved and thoughtfully adapted for modern comfort. Here, surrounded by olive trees and sea views, you can experience the island not just as a visitor, but as part of its enduring story.
