The north Crete coast has many wonderful beaches, the closest being Gerani, a 10-minute drive. About the same distance away is Rethymno; sometimes referred to as mini-Chania for its Venetian architecture, this charming university town has an identity all of its own, well worth a visit for a harbour-side lunch and a wander round its fascinating Old Town.
